Patten's Farm began in 1950 as a small family garden with
Donald and Dawn Patten and Donald's parents, Frank and
Adeline. Frank and Donald held full-time jobs driving
truck and worked the farm every spare moment possible with an
entrepreneurial spirit. The family was determined and
dedicated to build an honest business with quality products.
They raised juicy
strawberries ripened to a perfect red from the Maine sunshine,
butter and sugar corn, and squash . . . from buttercup to blue
hubbard. Many days, Donald and Dawn's children played at
the edge of the fields as their grandparents and parents
worked. Most of the harvest was wholesaled to local
markets.
In 1968, Donald and Dawn bought a 100-acre farm with a
colonial-style house and expansive barn. With undying
energy and hope of building their family business, the young
couple remodeled the house doing much of the work themselves.
What was once a dairy barn became a very attractive roadside
stand. Their children, Judy, Linda, and Frank, worked in
the fields, helped pick strawberries, and assisted customers
after school and on vacations.
The family farm was a success through teamwork of three
generations. People would flock to Patten's Farm to pick
their own strawberries and peas.
In the 1970's, The Patten's bought a farm in Buxton, just two
miles from the Gorham farm. With more land to farm, the
business could expand. By this time, Frank and Donald
had retired from driving and put all of their energies into
farming.
Friendships developed through customers. One was Bishop
Hutchins. In the early 1980's, Mr. Hutchins was nearing
retirement and this seemed like a good opportunity for the Patten's
to expand by opening another roadside stand in Kennebunkport.
Patten's Berry Farm offered fresh vegetables and fruits from
the Gorham farm to the local people of Kennebunkport and the
great influx of summer residents. Dawn's warm and caring
personality was welcomed
by the community. The product line has grown over the
years to meet the needs of their customers, from exotic melons
to fresh-squeezed orange juice.
Patten's Berry Farm remains a family business with owners,
Donald and Dawn. Their son, Frank, works side-by-side
with them every day. Their daughter, Linda, is the
office manager. Their latest venture,
pattensberryfarm.com is a total family commitment with Dawn,
Donald, Judy, Linda, and Frank.
